ok I have a page where the user can put in a string, and I have strings in the database. I want to know the best way to check to see if the user's string matches the database string.

Something like this maybe,

$sql = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM `table_name` WHERE `string`='$string'");
if (mysql_num_rows($sql) >= 1){
echo "Existing String";
} else {
echo "String Not In Table";
}
