Combining path?

hi, PHP talented!

the problem with these codes below is the incorporating of filename into the path to form as one path.

$images_dir = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/mygallery/photos/';

$photos_uploaded = $_FILES['photo_filename'];
$filename = $photos_uploaded['name'][$counter];
$dir_handler = $images_dir . $filename;

echo "<img src=$dir_handler />";
?>


I tried various ways of combining the "path" and the name of the "file" to form as one path.
To show an image but unfortunately any attempt was unsuccessful.

If you have good advice to guide me on this path puzzle pls. don't hesitate to help me.
