Display images in Directory as they are added

Hello, I'm curious if something is possible, if so I'd imagine it would be through ajax.  I'd like to display thumbnails of images in a specific directory as they are added to the directory along the top of a page.  I'd like to be able to click on the thumbnails and have a larger version open in a lightbox. I'd like to be able to easily delete images from the same page.  Lastly I'd like to have the most recent image appear larger in a different section of the page.  If anyone can point me in the right direction to find some of these answers I'd appreciate it, thank you.
