im trying to post a variable to a script all i can get it to return is text, but the $_post['feild'] wont show im guessing somthings missing.

function update_feild(div, fieldname, formname) {
http.open("post", "common/AJAX/update_feild.php", true);

parameter = document.getElementById(fieldname).value;

//Send the proper header information along with the request
http.setRequestHeader("Content-type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
    http.setRequestHeader("Content-length", parameter.length);
    http.setRequestHeader("Connection", "close");

http.onreadystatechange = function () {
	if(http.readyState == 4 && http.status == 200){
		var response = http.responseText;
		if(response) {
			document.getElementById(div).innerHTML = response;
		}
	}
}
http.send(parameter);
}
