AJAX POST

hi guys i have the functionality to post a form data but 1 its not getting throgh and second i have a problem with getting the conetent length due to the fact i have multiple form feilds i wish to post.

 

Here is the function dont take it too meanigfully its just a mish mash

 

function update_feild(div, fieldname, formname) {  
http.open("post", "common/AJAX/update_feild.php", true); 

parameter = document.getElementById(fieldname).value;

//Send the proper header information along with the request
http.setRequestHeader("Content-type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
    http.setRequestHeader("Content-length", parameter.length);
    http.setRequestHeader("Connection", "close");

http.onreadystatechange = function () { 
	if(http.readyState == 4 && http.status == 200){ 
		var response = http.responseText;
		if(response) { 
			document.getElementById(div).innerHTML = response;
		}
	}
}
http.send(parameter);
}

 

my main problem is here where i cant figure out how to get the length of multiple feilds
