want to create an ajax refining search

Hi,

 

I want to make a page that when it loads it queries a mysql database. Say it comes up with 1000 results. I then have several option on the screen to refine my search. Any changes I make will instantly show the updated amout of results.

 

an example of what I am after is www.autotrader.co.uk
