Need help with events calendar sourcing

I'm fairly new to php and have managed to grasp the basics, I'm creating a project for a friend and he wants to be able to have an events calendar on his web page. I wonder whats the best free option for this as I've seen so many out there and being on a php forum your opinion will count.

 

Couple possible features he would like to have.

 

A big events calendar max width 900PX - echo to a smaller version on the home page.

 

The ability to make events private and public dependant upon user drop down.

 

Is there a version already out there which will do this or am I biting off more than I can chew.

 

Any help or points in the right direction will be awesome
