Can someone tell me of an online converter or a php or actionscript or anything to tell me how many digits this means or atleast point me in some direction to figure this out.

1.79...e+308 means 1.79 * 10^308

Which means it's 308 digits long

However:

This number is a so called 'floating point' number, which means that your computer does not store all of its digits, but only several first ones, so that it fits in (relatively) small amount of memory.

Look up 'floating point' in wikipedia for example.
