Tabbed form to change variable?

I've tried searching around Google for how to do this, and nothing seems to really be helping. I haven't learned Javascript, so I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do.

 

I have an AJAX form. I need the user to be able to change a variable, and I'd like to do it by tabs/links (I know I could do a drop down, but it's the nature of the site that it should be tabbed). I don't know how to make the tabs change the variable though. Also, I'd need to make the selected one have different "active" styling, and make all the tabs not selected be "normal" styling, which I also could use help with.

 

I'm not asking anyone to code this for me, but if you know of some tutorials to point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
