Convert String To Variable Name

I have a function that takes the name of a form field here is a quick example:

 

<form action="" method="post" onSubmit="return save ( 'field_name' );" name="field_name_form">
    <input type="text" name="field_name" />
</form>

 

<script type="text/javascript">

function save ( field_name ) {

    // i need to get the content of field_name in form field_name_form
   // this doesnt do it
   var theForm = document + '.' + field_name_form;
   var theField = theForm + '.' + field_name;
   var content = theField.value;

}
