Doing math with DATE

This is a PHP/MySQL question of sorts. I have a field called FollowUpDate in the DB. What I want to be able to do is to do some math in PHP that will show me a record when it is within 7 days of the follow up date. My DB field is of the DATE Type (YYYY-MM-DD) and for the life I me I can't figure out how to pull the data out as I need it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

pull it out so its in a variable called $date then go echo"date(formathere, $date)";
