thebadbad
Sites like http://media-convert.com/ can convert MP4 files (and heaps others) to MP3 (128kbps though, when I tried). I think you could use cURL to feed a downloaded video file from YouTube to http://media-convert.com/, get it converted to MP3, and then download it to your server, and offer it to the user. Although it wouldn't be done fast, I'm sure. thebadbad
That should work, yes. I just remembered that media-convert.com also can convert from URL, so you should simply be able to POST the URL of the MP4 file (residing on Google's servers) to media-convert, and then grab the link to the MP3 when it finishes converting. They also offer 120 days of free hosting of the converted file (if it's downloaded 2 times during every 15 days period), making it possible to cache the MP3 links. I'm not sure media-convert would allow this method if you asked (they have ads on their site), but it should be technically possible.
