your query got no problem

but why are you using fetch array?? your query just returns one row. use it like $query_data= mysql_result($result, 0, 0);

TRY THIS ONE

<?php
$sql_query="SELECT SUM(split_amount) as split_sum FROM sc_expenses_transactions WHERE expense_id = '$transaction_id'";
$result=mysql_query($sql_query);
if(!$result){ die(mysql_error()); }
$query_data= mysql_result($result, 0, "split_sum");
echo "Query = " .$query_data."<br />";
?>
