Strange symbol in dropdown combo box

I have a strange symbol displayed in my dropdown box, when i preview it live on the internet, but not in the dreamweaver live view.

 

Here is the image with the strange symbol before the £ sign:

 

and here is the code which i have for the combo box:

<select name="cost" id="cost">
      <option selected>£50,000 or less</option>
</select>

 

Can anyone sugest why?

Probably you are using the wrong charset,

just use: £ instead of the pound sign
