Eaiser Way of extracting XML data ? Newbie

Can anyone help me please . My problem is that I think I am going a long way round to extract data from xML returned from my php script .My php script looks like this

echo '<?xml version="1.0"?>';

echo '<details>';

echo '<number>' ;

echo '5 Screens Available' ;

echo '</number>' ;

echo '<days>' ;

echo 'total hire 3 days' ;

echo '</days>' ;

echo '<driver>' ;

echo 'Paul Stott' ;

echo '</driver>' ;

echo '</details>' ;

and in my html, after the ajax connect etc I am using this to get the data

var xmlDocument = XMLHttpRequestObject.responseXML;

number = xmlDocument.getElementsByTagName("number");

numval = number[0].firstChild.data ;

days = xmlDocument.getElementsByTagName("days");

dayval  = days[0].firstChild.data ;

driver = xmlDocument.getElementsByTagName("driver");

driverval = driver[0].firstChild.data;

As there is one value in each array is there a quicker way to get straight to it.

Any advice would be much appreciated .

Thanks Mick  :confused:
