Here is a scenario: Two users are logged in to an application at the same time, user A write a message to user B, how can User B see that such message without refreshing the page. HTTP is a request/response standard of a client and a server - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP If you use AJAX, you can update the information on the current page without refreshing the entire page.
