Extracting XML

My problem is that I think I am going a long way round to extract data from xML returned from my php script .My php script looks like this

 

echo '<?xml version="1.0"?>';

echo '<details>';

 

echo '<number>' ;

echo '5 Screens Available' ;

echo '</number>' ;

 

echo '</details>' ;

 

and in my html, after the ajax connect etc I am using this to get the data

 

var xmlDocument = XMLHttpRequestObject.responseXML;

 

number = xmlDocument.getElementsByTagName("number");

  numval = number[0].firstChild.data ;

 

days = xmlDocument.getElementsByTagName("days"); 

  dayval  = days[0].firstChild.data ;

 

driver = xmlDocument.getElementsByTagName("driver"); 

driverval = driver[0].firstChild.data;

 

As there is one value in the whole array is there a quicker way to get straight to it.

Any advice would be much appreciated .

Converting to Json will reduce the overhead of your xml calls.  With that said, you are only needing 1 function call and an assignment.  It's not that bad.
