[SOLVED] function help

when i click on the onclick to call this function.. it replaces the value in the textarea.. i want it to add on next to the value..

so if it says "hello" in the text area and i press onclick it should say "hello Michael" rather than just say "Michael".

<script type='text/javascript'>
function changeText(number){

   document.getElementById('reply').innerHTML = document.getElementById(number).innerHTML;
}
</script>

i've read createElement might be the way to do this..

      var reply  = document.getElementById('reply');
