validating array with JS

Hey guys, I've got a JS Q about validating that something has been entered into an array of text fields, I only need them to enter something into the first field tho, my array looks like this -

 

e.g.

 

 

 

<input type="text" name="fields[]" id="fields" />

 

 

<input type="text" name="fields[]" id="fields" />

 

 

<input type="text" name="fields[]" id="fields" />

 

 

<input type="text" name="fields[]" id="fields" />

 

 

<input type="text" name="fields[]" id="fields" />

 

 

 

 

how do I validate that something has been entered into the first field of the array? I've tried a few things but no luck so far ..

 

 

 

if (document.formname.fields[].value.length==0) {

 

 

alert("Oops!");

 

 

return false;

 

 

}

To reference the array you would do this:

document.formname['fields[]']

 

So, to validate that the first field has a value the code would look like this

if(!document.formname['fields[]'][0].value)
{
    alert('Oops!');
    return false;
}
