Send table data with Ajax ?

I want to send back from my php script via XML, a variable that contains the tags for a table .

$table =  "<table border = '1' > " ;

$table .= "<h1> TEST AJAX TABLE </h1>" ;

$table .= "<td> Test ajax table cell  </td> " ;

$table .= "</tr> " ;

$table .= "</table> " ;

 

echo '<tabledata>' ;

echo $table ;

echo '</tabledata>' :

 

echo '</allocation>' ;

?>

 

in my JS after setting up ajax etc I am using this to extract the XML from the server

 

tabledata =  xmlDocument.getElementsByTagName("tabledata") ;

 

table = tabledata[0].firstChild.data ;

 

and then

 

document.getElementById('allocate').innerHTML=  table  ( 'allocate' is a DIV box)

 

I have tried everything but it will not work , I can extract the tabledata in xml if the variable $table is text but not as a set of tags .

 

I hope I have given enough info , Can anyone help me please ??
