Running RedHat 8.0 MySQL 3.23

Whenever I try to connect to MySQL from a machine other than the server that it is on I get a MySQL error:

\"Lost connection to MySQL server during query\"

and spit out to the console:

/usr/local/bin/safe_mysqld: line 273: 17778 Segmentation fault $NOHUP_NICENESS $ledir/$MYSQLD $defaults --basedir=$MY_BASEDIR_VERSION --datadir=$DATADIR $USER_OPTION --pid-file=$pid_file --skip-locking >>$err_log 2>&1

Number of processes running now: 1

mysqld process hanging, pid 17781 - killed

030221 17:28:21 mysqld restarted

connection from local machine can only be aquired by using \'localhost\' as the connection host, \'192.168.1.2\' (the servers IP) will fail, even from the server machine.

I installed originally from the source a couple months ago and had the same problem, and gave up (didn\'t need it THAT bad at the time). But this time I used the RPM build.

can anyone give me some insight?

Thanks
