IP addresses

A forum could theoretically be set to show the IP address to anyone, users or admin, but I've never seen one that shows IP addresses to regular users. And simple ones may not even be configured to store the IP address to show to the admin.

It all really depends on the forum software.

I suspect this one must save the IP as it knows what topics you've looked at even if you signon again as an unregistered visitor. Assuming that, how difficult (meaning does it take guru status) is it for someone to hack the board and get to those? Would the administrator know if that happened if using good security? Anything like that would appear to compromise the integrity of the board and subject others to hacking.

Anything can be hacked. The only 100% sure way to make sure that nothing important gets hacked is to not put it on the net. The question is whether it's likely that a site could be hacked, and that would depend on three factors - how good the security is, how good the hacker is, and how much motivation the hacker has to hack the site.

Would the administrator know if the site was hacked? Not necessarily. If the hacker doesn't leave any overt clues, or deface the site, the admin may have no idea it has happened.

As for how they remember you even if you haven't logged in, it could be other things as well - it could be the browser automatically going off your history, or the site could be putting cookies with your site browsing history on your pc. It doesn't necessarily have to be IP, and in fact IP addresses are unreliable as many of them change each time a user logs on.
