[SOLVED] Alternative to date_format?

Hey,

 

I used this simple piece of code:

$thedate = $_POST['date'];
$datetime = date_create($_POST['date']);
$whichday = strtolower(date_format($datetime, 'D'));

 

to take a date posted by a form, and workout which day of the week it was.

 

I now need the page to work on a different server which has php version 5.1.6

 

is there an alternative or similar function I can use in this version to have the same effect?

 

I want to save the hassle of upgrading PHP across the server

For anyone interested I changed the code to the following

 $thedate = $_POST['date'];
   $datetime = strtotime($_POST['date']);
    $whichday = strtolower(date('D', $datetime));
