using a submit button on a form to request a word from a database

Hello,

 

I'm reading a lot of tutorials about using text boxes to request info from a database, and drop down boxes.

 

I would like to be able to just click a button, and have an XMLHTTPRequest, get me a random value from one of my tables in a mySQL database. 

 

How would i just do a on click type of action on a form, it gets me a random value, and then displays it on the page?
