database and query efficiency

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am interested about making queries and code more efficient to put less strain on the server. I know of a few possibilities i could use and would just like your thoughts on them really. I am using mysqli.

1) prepare statements - i understand how they work but wander if it will really make a big difference

2) closing $result (record sets) after they have been used with $result->close();

3) indexes on table rows

Also i wandered if there was any way or application that measures server load / time taken to execute queries / logs all queries executed on any web page so i could see how much these things do affect the efficiency.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
