how do I make a button without using unordered lists or inputs? I am using the sliding doors technique, which seems to not be working at all... I get a weird image like this:

here is the code I used:

<style>
.category { background: url("images/button_slide.png") no-repeat top right; }
.category a { background: url("images/button_door.png") no-repeat top left; display: inline-block; padding: 8px 15px; }
</style>

<span class="category"><a href="#">Link</a></span>

Any reason why it's looking like the image above???
