Automatically backing up mysql

Hello everybody, Ive followed this tut on how to install a bash script to automatically backup my DB, Im very, very new to web hosting management and so this may seem a stupid question, but in regards to this tutorial I need to create a directory named /backups, Im unsure where to create this, would this be in my root besides the etc/, var/ directories? or in my httpdocs?
