Get count of referalls within this week

I've been inserting the referer information like this:

 

mysql_query("INSERT INTO site_referrals (referer_id, referer_date, referer_ip, referer_type)
VALUES ('$id', '$referer_date', '$referer_ip', 'in')");

 

But now was wondering how would i echo the total number of referalls this week?

 

I was thinking something such as:

$todaysweek = (int)date('W', time());
