If its windows read [url=http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php/topic,95378.0.html]this FAQ[/url]With PHP5 you need to enable the mysql_extension. If you are installing PHP on linux/mac you need to recomiple PHP with the -with-mysql command option.
