I'm learning php at the moment and I'm interested in getting into best practices. I want to pull apart a CMS or some sort of small but professional package to see how it works. I'm trying to look through wordpress but it's a little big for the moment. Does anyone have any recommendations for smaller but good packages?

If you are looking for best practices then you may not be interested in CMS systems especially open-source as they usually contain anything but best practices.

A few things I picked up from Google
