Whats wrong with this function?

Hey. I'm not very good at functions although I gave this my best shot.

My includes at the top of the page is..

<?php
session_start();
include("inc/config.php");
include('classes/imgmanip.php');
include("inc/functions.php");

$user = check_user($secret_key);
?>

($user gets the data for the current user, and works perfectly)

I call the function..

<?php display_alerts(); ?>

The function is within inc/functions.php

Here is the function.

function display_alerts() {
    if($user->unread_mail == '1'){
        $alert[] = '<span style="color:#e11919;">1 Unread Mail</span>';
    } elseif($user->unread_mail > '1'){
        $alert[] = '<span style="color:#e11919;">'.$user->unread_mail.' Unread Mails</span>';
    }

    if($alert){
        return $alert;
    } else {
        $alert[] = '<span style="color:#e11919;">Currently you have no alerts. =[</span>';
        return $alert;
    }
}

Nothing gets displayed?

Whats suppose to happen is, it checks for new alerts, so if there is any unread mail. If there is, it'll bring up an alert of how many unread mails there is for that user. Else, if there is no alerts, to display "Currently you have no alerts. =["

Nothing happens?

Can you help? Thanks
