Reading a zipped file online?

To read data from a zipped csv file online do I actually have to extract the file on the server first or can it be read whilst still zipped?

You can read a zip file, whitout extracting it to the server, the link below is of a snippet which reads a docx file, which is a zip file in a sense. You can use it as an example.
