Email Marketing--How to Know if an email was opened

Hello!

 

I'm on the Email Marketing Bandwagon.

 

I'm in some of the final stages of my first version of eNewsletter marketing software, PHP/mySQL based that is a standalone product dropped onto peoples web servers.

 

The product works very well, includes click tracking, auto unsubscribe, double-opt in features, target segmentation, etc.

 

Where I'm stumped at the last stage is knowing just if the email was opened! I've toyed with a couple ideas like having a javascript item that is housed on the server of the newsletter software that would then call the software to track the opening but I'm not 100% sure how to make that work.

 

Does anyone have any advice, ideas on how that could be worked in?
