Query error handling

I could have swore there was a tutorial up here that talked about not using DIE in favor of handling the errors yourself. I'm interested in learning how to capture and handle my own errors. Can anyone point me to a good tutorial or a good page in the manual?

 

I'd like to be able to catch invalid queries, repeating a value in a unique field, etc.
