opfocus for type=password in a form

I have this form that fills in the field name and then when user clicks it it erases it:

<input type="password" name="password" class="text" onfocus="this.value=''; this.onfocus=null;" value="password"/>

However, because the type=password, it echos out dots before the user clicks the field (and under that dots is the value "password"

How do I do it so that it says "password" in the field but when the user clicks it erases that value and THEN echos dots when the user types in their own password?
