Chain select using PHP

I have 2 select boxes and have them dynamically populated based on the selectbox selections.

example:
if i select 'fruit' then the 2nd select boxes will be populated with a list of fruits,
if i select 'vegetable' then the 2nd select boxes will be populated with a list of vegetables.

these values are coming from a database table and not a predefined array. Can this be done and how?
