AJAX Help

I have a website that uses a bit of Ajax.  They all work but what I'm not trying to do is to put all of the requests and the javascript functions into one file which I will then have this link to in the head section of the web page

 

<script src="js/functions.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

 

However now when I run the web page I keep getting this error - "Missing } in XML expression" and it's pointing at this line in the file functions.js - request = new XMLHttpRequest();

 

But why would the javascript only return errors now it is in an external file?  Thanks for any help.
