Div margin collapses when using overflow:auto

I have a div inside a div. The first div is 800 pixels and the one inside it is 780 pixels. The div inside uses margin auto to center itself inside the surrounding div but for some reason in IE the margin collapses when I add overflow:auto

<div style="margin:10px auto 8px; height:380px; width:780px; background-color:#282828; border:1px solid #383838;" id="Response-1">

</div>

 

Does anyone know a fix for this? Thanks
