url rewrite + php GET

Hi guys,

 

I am a complete newbi to mod rewrite, have read quit a few tutorials on net but nuthing seems to make sence or work - hence have checked of mod rewrite is enabled and it is, so thats not the isse

 

my current url

http://localhost.com/new/index.php?dir=items&cat=Bikes&sub_cat=Commuting_and_Town_Bikes&type=electric

 

want to make it look like

http://localhost.com/new/index.php/items/Bikes/Commuting_and_Town_Bikes/electric

 

and how will php GET work with this

 

Any help will be really appreseated
