image through javascript

Ok so this is a little different of a question but hopefully someone out there can help me find the answer. I am basically creating a really cool way to manipulate images (slicing them into pieces). That part is working fine and dandy. I am doing this to create some really nice effects for transitioning images (think flash but with javascript). However I have run into a bit of a snag. When I am breaking the images into pieces I am putting each of the image's sources as background images on divs and then setting there left positions and top positions. One thing that I didnt realize is that in doing this the images are not resizable because they are using the original images size and there is no css property to change the background size (css3 there is but i need to make it css2 compliant). So I was thinking about working with the image data (<img src="data:image/jpg;base64,base64encoded_string_here" />) and changing the size of the image through that if it is possible. If anyone knows how to do change the size or can come up with another solution that would be very helpful.
