Question about internationalization

I am writing a program in PHP and I am thinking of making it translatable into other languages. I am thinking of using either gettext, php-gettext or simply including a language file. Gettext would be my preference, however the only problem is I'm not sure whether most hosts would be able to support gettext without a lot of hassle. php-gettext would be good if it weren't apparently so slow and having a language include file is fast, but doesn't have any sort of fallback if something is unavailable. So my question is, what do most major PHP applications use for internationalization and why?
