Problem selecting database

I created a MySQL database with phpmyadmin and want to connect to it using php. The database is called 'examples'. The php file to connect to it is called test2.php and the code is as follows:

or die("Unable to connect to MySQL");

  or die("Could not select examples");

I typed http://localhost/test2.php into my browser and the following messages where displayed:

 

Connected to MySQL

Could not select examples

 

Could anyone tell me what is wrong?

you don't have a database named "examples". double check all your spelling.

I created a database with phpmyadmin called examples. I thought that this would be enough. Where is my spelling incorrect?

If you use mysql_error() in your or die(...) statement, php/mysql will tell you why the function is failing -

 

or die("Could not select examples" . mysql_error());
