Database error

Hi,

I've uploaded my website to the server and I'm getting this error:-

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home/c/h/chichesterag/public_html/Connections/gary.php on line 9

 

This is the first 9 lines of code:-

ini_set ("display_errors", "1"); 
error_reporting(E_ALL);

$gary = mysql_connect("localhost", "root") or die("Error connecting to database<br /><br />".mysql_error());
mysql_select_db("people") or die("Error selecting database<br /><br />".mysql_error());

The server's owner doesn't know what the problem is so I'm hoping someone here can help.
