Begginer question - Configuration

You'll have to forgive me if this has been covered; the search daemon isn't working for me.

I have successfully installed apache, and I believe php too.  When I try http://localhost/, I get the "it works!" message.

I've been going round in circles between google and the apache man trying to figure this out.  I'm in a win7 environment and I used the msi installer for apache

Where do I place the files I want apache to host?  I'm having a hell of a time finding a guide to tell me how to do this, and it's the core function of apache.

Have I missed something crucial here?
