It depends on what you want to do with it.

 

If you are using it for a max count to rotate through the pictures then you would row count the db.

 

$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM tablename"); 
$num_rows = mysql_num_rows($result);  
// Display the results 
echo $num_rows;

 

 

if you need it for an ID to index for the next picture to be added to the db

 

$q = "select MAX(pic_id) from tbl_name";
$result = mysql_query($q);
$data = mysql_fetch_array($result);
// Display the results 
echo $data[0];

 

note your pic_id will need to be numeric only for the above to work.
