Upload/Resize?

I'm trying to build an upload page that will upload an image, resize original to max size and also create a thumbnail of the image. I found a couple pages that showed how to do it using djpeg, cjpeg, and pnmscale but I don't think my host has that capability. Is there a way to do this without using those apps or a way to run something to display what my host can do? I already using php upload and it works fine just need to be able to resize a couple copies of the image.
