"Best" way to manipulate Excel with php?

Is there a best (i.e., preferred) way to manipulate Excel with php?

 

I've been using COM without any problems (other than if I halt my script before it's finished and able to delete the objects, then have to use task maanger to kill the Excel instance running), but always curious if there are better ways to do things.
