Not so standard apache + php install

I've done many installs of Apache and PHP on various distributions of Linux (I am still not an "advanced" user).

My question is this, what would be the best/most secure way to compile apache + php?

I want the most basic form of apache with the most secure options with SSL and PHP enabled.

Would it basically be just a configure with ssl and php enabled before compile, or are there options to remove support for things that are not needed, and is there anything else that needs to be enabled for more security?
