Internet Connection Speeds

I don't know if this is the right board, but... What would a good internet connection speed be if you were to run a dedicated server from a PC?

Here is the package that I may get:

- 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload
- Support for dynamic and static IP addresses

That is a business package with Charter.

It depends on how much data you plan on transferring/what you're serving.

I was thinking that it would be a review site, where users would come and look at reviews of all sorts of products.

-Cars
-Movies
-Games
-electronics
-clothing
-accessories
-hygiene products (Shampoo, Clone, Perfume, etc.)
-furniture
-etc.

So... Basically this would be an all Database driven site, with some pictures to make the site not look boring.

Would this be a good, if this were to be a image hosting service?

With hosting a server like that, your primary concern would be with upload bandwidth.

Also, if your provider has any bandwidth limitations. For example, your upload may be 1Mbps, but they may only allow you 20GB total per month.


1 Mb upload should be fine for what you're looking to do.

I don't think that my ISP has a bandwidth limit.


How many connections do you think that will support at once?

It depends on what you serve.

1 megabit is 128 kilobytes

"Essentially" you can serve 10 people the same 12.8 kilobyte page at the same time.

In reality it can handle more than that
