Help/Advice on 1 Interface

Hi,

 

I'm new to php and ajax (developing my first php/ajax web app) and i'm not sure how I can achieve this interface that i'm trying to write. The interface consists of 3 divs ( a container with 2 divs inside (left column and right column)). The left column will have icon buttons in a 3x3 matrix. The right column will display the dynamic content of each icon/button. The image below illustrates the interface:

 

 

 

 

 

 

I am not sure how I go about developing this so any help or advice in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated
